Bolivia: Doctors to strike in La Paz May 8

Health workers at La Paz’s Miraflores hospital complex are planning to hold a sit-in strike on May 8; disruptions to medical services expected

Warning

Event

The general secretary of the Union of Medical Branches of Public Health (SIRMES) announced that doctors at the Miraflores hospital complex in La Paz will go on strike on Wednesday, May 8. Health workers are expected to hold a sit-in protest at the complex to demand the government fulfill an agreement to provide greater supplies for doctors across the country. Longer-than-normal waiting times are possible and some services may not be available. According to the SIRMES general secretary, health workers from rural areas will also participate in the protest.

Context

Medical workers are accusing the government of failing to provide enough medicine and supplies for hospitals in La Paz, as well as out in rural areas. According to union leaders, several surgeries planned at the Children’s Hospital in Miraflores have been canceled since April 29 due to a lack of medicine. SIRMES also warned that 400 doctors on contract at the complex may leave after not receiving payments.

Advice

Individuals in La Paz are advised to confirm doctor's appointments, to anticipate longer waiting times in medical facilities for the duration of the strike, and to avoid any potential related protests.
