Mali: Residents protest G5 Sahel HQ relocation to Bamako May 23-24

Residents protest relocation of G5 Sahel headquarters to Bamako May 23-24; heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions expected over the coming hours

Informational

Event

Residents of Bamako continued to protest in the Badalabougou area to denounce the installation of the G5 Sahel headquarters in the capital on Thursday, May 23. The demonstrators have reportedly blocked a road in the area to protest the move, which comes after militants attacked the former G5 Sahel headquarters in Mopti in June 2018. Some protesters argue the relocation of the headquarters to the capital is likely to attract militant activity to the area. The protest is expected to run for 48 hours, through Friday, May 24.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the protest site over the coming hours.

Advice

Individuals in Bamako are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
