Mali: UN peacekeepers attacked in the north May 18
Armed men attack peacekeepers in Timbuktu and Kidal regions May 18; one peacekeeper killed and three others injured
Event
On Saturday, May 18, two separate attacks targeted the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) forces in the northern Timbuktu and Kidal regions. In Timbuktu, armed men robbed a vehicle belonging to the MINUSMA, killing one Nigerian peacekeeper. In Tessalit (Kidal region), three Chadian peacekeepers were injured when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb. Further such incidents are possible in the coming days and weeks.
Context
Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
