Mali: Demonstrations expected in Bamako July 12 and 13

Demonstrations expected in Bamako July 12 and 13; heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions expected over the coming hours

Warning

Event

Protests are expected in Bamako on Friday, July 12, and Saturday, July 13. Protesters were slated to march on Friday from Place CAN to Monument Bougiba beginning at 14:00 (local time). Demonstrations are also expected outside the Mess Militaire in the Badalabougou area from 14:00 on July 12 and 13.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the protest sites.

Context

Demonstrators frequently stage protests in the Badalabougou area of Bamako to denounce the move of the G5 Sahel headquarters to Bamako. The move comes after the former G5 Sahel headquarters in Mopti was attacked in June 2018. Some protesters argue the relocation of the headquarters to the capital is likely to attract militant activity to the area.

Advice

Individuals in Bamako are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
