Mali: Protesters loots UN camp in Sévaré October 12

Event

Around 1000 people gathered outside of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) camp in Sévaré (Mopti region) on Saturday, October 12, to protest the presence of the peacekeepers in the region. The situation escalated as protesters broke into a warehouse and reportedly stole equipment and supplies from storage containers. At least one vehicle was also set on fire. In response, the governor of Mopti region has implemented a curfew between the hours of 18:00 to 06:00 (local time) until Sunday, October 20. Further demonstrations are possible in the near term.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
