Attack on army patrol in Gao region leaves seven soldiers dead on November 18; similar attacks possible over the near term

Suspected militants attacked an army position in Gao region on Monday, November 18, killing at least seven Malian soldiers and wounding 15 others. According to military officials, Malian and Nigerien soldiers were conducting a joint patrol in Tabankort when they were ambushed by gunfire. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Similar attacks are possible in northern Mali over the near term.
Context
Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4500 troops stationed throughout the Sahel.
