Bolivia: Protests and march scheduled in El Alto and La Paz January 15 /update 43

Former President Evo Morales' political party MAS has called for protests on Wednesday, January 15, in El Alto and for a march to La Paz. Further, at least seven trade unions have also called for mobilizations on the same date in La Paz's Plaza San Francisco to sign a pact in defense of democracy as of 18:00 (local time). They aim to communicate a message of unity and to underline that the next president must not use or speak of violence. Teachers, doctors, miners, and people of many other sectors will join the action. Related protests remain possible in other urban areas.

A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are to be expected throughout La Paz, in El Alto, and on roadways linking the two cities. Clashes cannot be ruled out.

Context

Former President Morales resigned on November 10 following weeks of protests organized by opposition political organizations. The TSE was accused of manipulating the results of the October 20 election in favor of Morales to prevent a runoff, sparking an escalation in demonstrations nationwide. More than 30 people have been killed in clashes with security forces or between rival political supporters.
