Mali: Fulani village attacked in Mopti region February 14

Event

A group of approximately 30 gunmen attacked the Fulani village of Ogossagou (Mopti region) overnight between Thursday, February 13, and Friday, February 14. According to local officials, at least 20 people were killed in the assault and 28 others remain missing. Unverified reports attributed the attack to a traditional Dogon hunters' group. Some homes were set on fire and livestock was also stolen.

Retaliatory attacks are possible in the region over the near term.

Context

Ogossagou was the site of an armed attack on March 23, 2019, which left approximately 160 Fulani herders dead.

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4500 troops stationed throughout the Sahel.
