Mali: Military checkpoint attacked in Ségou region February 9 /update 1

Event

Unidentified militants assaulted a Malian military (FAMa) checkpoint in Alatona (Ségou region) in Niono circle on the morning (local time) of Sunday, February 9. The attack occurred at approximately 03:30, leaving at least three soldiers dead and another three wounded. According to initial reports, the militants stole two vehicles and set the command post on fire. Earlier in the night, gunmen also attacked a checkpoint near Sorowel but were repulsed by the soldiers. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the operations.

Similar attacks targeting security forces in the region are likely over the near term.
