Two soldiers assigned to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) were killed by unidentified assailants on Saturday, June 13, near the village of Tarkint (Gao region). According to officials, the victims were part of a logistical convoy that was traveling between the towns of Gao and Tessalit (Kidal region) that had stopped near Tarkint when it was attacked. Further such attacks targeting UN peacekeepers are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
