Cayman Islands: Thousands without power following adverse weather July 11

A tropical wave moved across the Cayman Islands on Saturday, July 11, bringing thunderstorms and downing power lines. As a result, around 5000 people have been left without power and localized flooding has been reported in parts of George Town and Savanah. Power outages were reported in every district except East End, and utility providers are working to resolve outages as soon as possible. The weather system brought nearly 4 inches (101 mm) to some areas between 11:30 and 16:30 (local time).

The weather system was forecast to leave the Cayman area on Saturday evening, but residual disruption is possible in the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
