Activists stage protests against COVID-19 restrictions and judicial reforms in Buenos Aires and other cities on September 13; further demonstrations likely in medium term

Warning

Event

Hundreds of activists staged anti-government demonstrations in Buenos Aires and other cities on Sunday, September 13, over various issues including judicial reforms and the country's coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions. The main protest was held at the Buenos Aires Obelisk, where several hundred demonstrators gathered whilst some drove in a vehicular convoy causing traffic disruption around the site. Smaller demonstrations were reported at Quinta de Olivos, in the north of the capital, and the cities of Bariloche, Cordoba, Mar del Plata, Rosario, and Tucuman. The protests had been organized via social media sites under the #13STodosALasCalles slogan, but turnout was lower than at some other anti-government demonstrations in recent weeks.

Sunday's protests are reported to have remained peaceful but caused localized disruption in some areas. Further demonstrations are likely in Buenos Aires and other cities in the medium term, with an associated risk of disruptions and unrest.

Advice

Those in Argentina are advised to monitor developments, anticipate disruptions in the vicinity of protest sites, avoid demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
