Bolivia: Laid-off workers demonstrate in Cochabamba September 9

Dozens of laid-off workers demonstrate in Cochabamba on September 9; further demonstrations likely in the near term

Warning

Event

Dozens of laid-off workers marched through Cochabamba on Wednesday morning, September 9, arguing that their dismissals were unjustified amid the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The demonstration seemingly remained peaceful, and no clashes or arrests were immediately reported.

Separately, drivers reportedly formed a blockade along the road connecting Sucre and Cochabamba on Wednesday in the No.7 Mojo Toro Chuquí Chuquí district. Participants were demanding medicines and equipment for hospitals in the region, among other resources.

Further protests are possible in Cochabamba and elsewhere in the near term.

Advice

Those in Cochabamba, and Bolivia more generally, are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
