Mali: Armed forces regain control of Farabougou (Koulikoro region) on October 22

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have reportedly regained control of the village of Farabougou (Koulikoro region) on Thursday, October 22, following two weeks of blockade, reportedly by a Fulani armed group. The FAMa had been unable to access the village due to heavy rains making the road impassable. The operation was undertaken with the support of the air force.

Further attacks by armed groups are likely throughout Mali over the near term. A heightened security presence is anticipated in the vicinity of Farabougou as investigations into the attack and the search for those abducted continues.

Context

The blockade of Farabougou started with the abduction of several residents of the village, with the attackers allegedly accusing the inhabitants, who are mainly from the Bambara ethnic group, of being involved in the deaths of members of the Fulani community.
