Eritrea: US State Department confirms explosions in Asmara on November 28 /update 3

US State Department confirms six explosions in Asmara following reports of rocket attacks on November 28; further attacks possible

Warning

Event

The US State Department has reported that six explosions took place in Asmara late on Saturday, November 28. While the State Department did not state the cause of the explosions, it comes following reports of rocket attacks conducted by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) from neighboring Ethiopia. The exact locations of the incidents have not been confirmed and there have been no immediate reports of casualties.

Similar reports emerged on Friday, November 27, of rocket attacks in Asmara, Dekemhare, and other locations in Eritrea.

The news also follows claims made by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Friday that the Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) had seized Mekelle, the Tigrayan regional capital.

Further similar attacks are possible in the near term as the conflict across the border continues.

Advice

Those in Asmara are advised to shelter in place in anticipation of further attacks, monitor developments in their area of operations, and liaise with appropriate consular authorities.
