Event
Several social movements and leftist organizations, including the Revolutionary Communist Party (Partido Comunista Revolucionario, PCR) and the Class and Combative Union (Corriente Clasista y Combativa, CCC), have called for rallies in Buenos Aires Dec. 18 and nationwide Dec. 20 to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the December 2001 riots (also known as the Argentinazo) during Argentina's economic crisis. The largest events are likely to occur in Buenos Aires at the following locations:
Dec. 18: Rally at the Obelisco from 1600, though some groups intend to gather from 1200.
Dec. 20: Rally at Plaza de Mayo from 1600.
The nationwide rallies Dec. 20, will probably also begin at or around 1600. The following rally locations have been announced:
Bariloche, Rio Negro: Civic Center
Concepcion del Uruguay, Entre Rios: Plaza General Francisco Ramirez
Esquina, Corrientes: Plaza 9 de Julio
Junin, Buenos Aires: Plaza 25 de Mayo
Posadas, Misiones: Plaza 9 de Julio
Resistencia, Chaco: Plaza 25 de Mayo
Rosario, Santa Fe: Plaza 25 de Mayo
Demonstrations could occur in other cities and towns nationwide. Participation at events is likely to vary by location; dozens to hundreds of people could attend the rallies. Disruptions are likely near all large gatherings.
Police will probably deploy to monitor any major demonstrations, especially in the capital. Significant violence is not likely; however, isolated skirmishes are possible if demonstrators disobey police orders to disband.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a precaution. Heed the instructions of the local authorities. Allow extra time to reach destinations near known protest locations Dec. 18 and 20.
