Argentina: Activists to protest against abortion in multiple cities through Dec. 29
Activists to hold anti-abortion protests in cities in Argentina Dec. 26-29. Main rallies at Congress in Buenos Aires at 1800 Dec. 28 and 29.
Event
Various activist groups plan to stage demonstrations in several cities and towns Dec. 26-29 against abortion. The demonstrations will culminate in a major rally outside Congress in Buenos Aires Dec. 29, when the Senate will discuss a bill to legalize abortion; the bill was previously passed by the Chamber of Deputies Dec. 11. Issues around abortion rights in Argentina are highly divisive and associated demonstrations in the capital are likely to draw large crowds.
On Dec. 26, activists plan to protest in provinces nationwide. A demonstration has been confirmed at Plaza Moreno in La Plata from 1730. In Neuquen and Cipoletti, participants plan to march from Monumento a San Martin and the intersection of Avenidas Leandro N. Alem and J. F. Kennedy respectively, to Puente Carretero between the two cities, starting at 1700. Organizers have indicated that similar demonstrations are likely nationwide Dec. 27-29. Participation at events is likely to vary by location.
The largest demonstrations will probably take place in Buenos Aires Dec. 28 and 29. On Dec. 28, participants will march from Plaza de Mayo to Congress at 1800; they will also rally outside Congress Dec. 29 from 1800.
Police will probably deploy to monitor any major demonstrations. Spontaneous counterdemonstrations by supporters of abortion rights could materialize near planned rally points. Significant violence is not likely; however, isolated skirmishes are possible if opposing groups are near each other.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Allow extra time to reach destinations near known protest locations Dec. 26-29.
