Argentina: Nationwide 24-hour commuter rail strike to be held on Dec. 22
Unionized commuter rail workers to hold 24-hour nationwide train strike in Argentina Dec. 22. Significant transport disruptions likely.
Event
Members of the Union for Train Drivers' Brotherhood (Sindicato de Conductores de Trenes La Fraternidad) will hold a nationwide 24-hour train strike on Dec. 22. The purpose of the labor action is to demand the government pay for increased healthcare. In the event an agreement is not made, union leaders have threatened to hold an additional 48-hour strike on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Although no formal demonstrations have been announced, associated protests or picketing are possible during the strike. Police will likely deploy to monitor any major demonstrations, should they manifest.
Expect lengthy delays and overcrowding, as there will be increased dependence on alternative forms of transportation, including public bus service. Reduced taxi availability is also possible due to the strike. Lingering disruptions are possible even after the strike ends. Traffic congestion could increase if commuters use personal vehicles instead of public transportation during the strike.
Advice
Plan to use alternative forms of transportation on Dec. 22. Confirm taxi reservations and travel itineraries. Allow additional time for transport if traveling through congested areas. Avoid demonstrations as a routine security precaution.
