Argentina: Pro-abortion activists to protest in several urban centers on Dec. 10-11

Pro-abortion activists affiliated with various groups, including the National Campaign for Safe, Legal and Free Abortion (Campaña Nacional por el Derecho al Aborto Legal, Seguro y Gratuito), plan to rally and protest in multiple cities across Argentina on Dec. 10-11. The purpose of the action is to show support for a bill President Alberto Fernandez sent to the Legislature on Nov. 17, which seeks to legalize abortion.

The largest demonstration will take place in Buenos Aires, with a rally outside of the National Congress beginning at 1000. Protesters in Buenos Aires plan to remain on-site through the duration of the Congressional voting session on the proposed abortion bill, which is expected to last approximately 30 hours. Other confirmed demonstrations that are likely to draw large crowds will start at the following locations:

• Bahia Blanca: Plaza Rivadavia, 1900

• Bariloche: Civic Center, 1700

• Cordoba: Plaza Velez Sarsfield, 1800

• Jujuy: Plaza Belgrano, 1700

• Parana: Casa de Gobierno de Entre Rios,1830

• Rosario: Plaza San Martin

• Salta: Plaza de la Legislatura, 1000

• Santa Fe: Plaza San Martin

• Santiago del Estero: Plaza Libertad

• Tucuman: Casa Historica, 1800

Unannounced, spontaneous, or impromptu demonstrations could occur in other cities and towns nationwide. Anti-abortion groups plan to hold counterprotests, especially in Buenos Aires. Participation at events is likely to vary by location. Disruptions are likely near all large gatherings. Significant violence is not likely; however, isolated skirmishes are possible if opposing groups are near each other, or if police attempt to clear any potential roadblocks.

Avoid all protests as a standard security precaution. Do not attempt to cross any roadblocks. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Allow extra time to reach destinations near known protest locations Dec. 10.
