Bolivia: Doctors plan nationwide general strike, Feb. 1

Doctors plan to strike nationwide in Bolivia, Feb. 1. Associated protests are possible.

Warning

Event

Doctors have called for a 24-hour strike Feb. 1 to demand the revision of several aspects of the recently approved Health Emergency Law. Emergency services and coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-related procedures will reportedly still be provided. Doctors have warned of an indefinite general strike at an as yet undetermined time should their demands not be met. The strike will likely be well observed in La Paz, El Alto, and Santa Cruz.

Private health clinics will probably remain open during the action; however, increased demand for care at private facilities could disrupt services. Related protests are possible near hospitals. Security forces will likely deploy to monitor any events that occur. Low-level confrontations between protesters and the police are possible.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Confirm all medical appointments, including the availability of services at private clinics, due to the potential for increased demand. If possible, contact healthcare facilities in advance for information about wait times, which could vary among hospitals and clinics.
