Informational

Event

Unidentified militants killed at least four and injured six peacekeepers with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) following a device explosion and armed attack in Bambara-Maoude in the Tombouctou Region of Mali Jan. 13. Authorities have confirmed the assault, noting that it occurred during a UN security operation. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.

Context

The deadly raid underscores the pervasive insecurity in northern Mali. Landmine explosions, attacks, and roadside bombs are common in central and northern regions of Mali. The threat is highest along highways and roads frequently used by security forces in Mopti, Aguelhok, Anefis, Gao, Tessalit, and Tombouctou. Islamist militants waging an insurgency in central and northern Mali will likely continue to carry out attacks in those regions. Several foreign military personnel have been killed or wounded since January 2019.
