Argentina: Opposition coalition calls for nationwide protests Feb. 9 to demand the reopening of schools
Opposition parties plan nationwide protests in Argentina Feb. 9 against school closures. Disruptions likely, especially near central parks.
Event
Leaders of the Together for Change (Juntos por el Cambio) opposition coalition have called for nationwide protests Feb. 9 to demand the government approve the reopening of face-to-face learning at all schools. Schools around several parts of the country have already reopened under the nation's COVID-19 recovery plan; however, some are still closed.
Most of the demonstrations are scheduled to begin at 1800. Unless otherwise stated, demonstrations are scheduled at this time at the following locations:
Buenos Aires: National Ministry of Education
Cipolletti: Plaza General Jose de San Martin
Comodoro Rivadavia: Monumento a San Martin
Cordoba: Plaza Colon
Corrientes: Parque Mitre
La Rioja: Plaza 25 de Mayo
Mendoza: Plaza Independencia from 1830
Neuquen: Monumento a San Martin from 1100
Parana: Plaza 1 de Mayo
Resistencia: Plaza 25 de Mayo
Rosario: Monumento a la Bandera
Salta: Explanada del Colegio Nacional
Santa Fe: Ministry of Education
Tucuman: Casa Historica
Hundreds of people could attend the rallies, which may result in localized traffic disruptions. Police will likely deploy to monitor some of the larger gatherings. Major violence is unlikely, though the possibility of low-level isolated skirmishes cannot be discounted.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed the instructions of the local authorities. Plan for localized traffic disruptions near known protest locations in Argentina Feb. 9.
