Bolivia: Health workers to march nationwide March 2 amid ongoing strike /update 1
Healthcare workers to protest nationwide in Bolivia from 1100 March 2; ongoing strike to persist through at least March 15.
Event
Healthcare workers affiliated with the National Health Council (Consejo Nacional de Salud, CONASA) announced they will maintain their ongoing, nationwide strike through at least March 15. Striking workers have also called for nationwide protests from 1100 March 2. The exact protest locations have not been specified; likely rally points include hospitals, government buildings, and central squares. Larger demonstrations are likely in major cities like La Paz and Santa Cruz.
The work stoppage will not affect emergency services and COVID-19 care. However, disruptions to routine health services at government hospitals and health facilities may persist due to understaffing. Increased demand for care could also disrupt services at private facilities.
Police will probably deploy to monitor any large protests. Clashes between police and protesters are possible if the latter are overly disruptive or breach security cordons. Several sectors joined related protests by health workers Feb. 22; in La Paz, police used teargas to disperse those who had gathered near the presidential palace. Similar confrontations are possible during any upcoming protests.
Context
The health workers launched the action Feb. 19 to demand the immediate repeal of the country's recently approved emergency health law. Medical workers are especially opposed to the prohibition of strikes by health personnel under the new law. Nonetheless, various sectors have also held sporadic protests over other health-related issues linked to COVID-19 and additional demonstrations are possible.
Advice
Confirm medical appointments at public health facilities. Be prepared for some delays. Follow all security personnel instructions. Avoid all protests.
