Mali: Medical professional continuing 10-day strike at several hospitals in Bamako as of April 26
Healthcare workers continuing 10-day strike at several hospitals in Bamako, Mali, as of April 26. Health services disruptions likely.
Event
Healthcare workers represented by the National Union of Heath, Social Action, and Promotion of the Family (SNS-AS-PF), as well as local labor committees at several hospitals in the greater Bamako area, are continuing their 10-day strike in the Malian capital as of April 26. The purpose of the work stoppage, which began April 22, is to protest the alleged lack of adequate medical equipment, among other issues. Employees of the Gabriel Toure University Hospital, Point G University Hospital Center, the Hospital of Mali, Kati University Hospital Center, and the Bamako Dermatology Hospital are reportedly participating in the labor action. Although labor leaders have announced no specific plans for such gatherings, striking healthcare workers could also hold protests and pickets as part of the walkout.
Although preliminary reports indicate that facilities affected by the strike are maintaining a minimum level of care, disruptions to medical services are likely for the duration of the action. Longer wait times and limited appointment options may also occur at other healthcare facilities in the city as patients who would normally patronize the targeted hospitals seek treatment elsewhere.
Advice
Confirm all medical appointments at impacted hospitals, as well as at nearby healthcare facilities due to the potential for overflow disruptions. As a standard security precaution, keep away from any strike-related demonstrations that may materialize.
