Bolivia: Protesting truckers blocking roads in Suticollo in Cochabamba Department on May 13

Protesting truck drivers block roads in Suticollo, Cochabamba Department, May 13. Major transport delays likely throughout the area.

Warning

Event

Protesting truck drivers are using their vehicles to block roads, including National Route 4, in Suticollo, Cochabamba Department, on May 13. The purpose of the action is to protest a proposed freight train service between Bolivia and the Chilean port of Arica that has been in the pilot testing stages.

Major transport disruptions are likely. Clashes are possible, especially if police attempt to forcibly clear roads.

Context

The truck drivers are protesting the Arica-La Pas rail freight service after many saw a reduction in their hours as a result of firms switching to the train to import and export goods. While the government reached an agreement with national drivers' organizations regarding the train, groups representing the drivers in Cochabamba Department have rejected the agreement, asserting that they plan on continuing demonstrations.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Consider alternative driving routes, particularly to National Route 4. Allow for additional travel time if traveling west of the city of Cochabamba. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them before proceeding.
