Warning

Event

French officials confirmed May 5 that a French independent journalist has been kidnapped in the city of Gao, capital of Gao Region, April 8; the confirmation followed the release of a video allegedly showing the victim. Authorities have stated that they have liaised with the family and Malian authorities. In the video, the journalist stated that Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) militants linked to Al-Qaeda (AQ) had captured him. There has been no official ransom demand and the current location of the victim is unknown.

Context

The journalist is the first French national to be abducted in Mali since 2016. The attack underscores the severe insecurity and risk of kidnap from armed elements operating in Mali, including across urban centers. Efforts by local authorities to halt such activities have largely failed to lessen the threat.
