Argentina: Unionized port workers' launch 24-hour nationwide strike June 18

Port workers in Argentina holding 24-hour nationwide strike June 18 to demand COVID-19 vaccines. Port disruptions likely. Protests possible.

Informational

Event

Port workers associated with several unions, including the Maritime, Port and Naval Industry Federation (Federacion Maritima, Portuaria y de la Industria Naval, Fempinra) and the Argentine Association of Fishing Captains, Pilots and Patrons (Asociacion Argentina de Capitanes, Pilotos y Patrones de Pesca), have launched a 24-hour nationwide strike June 18. The action is to demand that the national government provide port workers with COVID-19 vaccines. Workers called off a related strike in May after the government assured them of vaccines; however, organizers say they have yet to receive vaccinations.

Disruptions to port operations are likely during the walkout. Protests could occur near main ports; heightened security is possible. Lingering shipping delays could occur after the action ends as ports clear backlogs.

Advice

Confirm maritime shipments and port-handling operations nationwide through at least June 18. Exercise caution near main ports; avoid any potential protests.
