Mali: Demonstration in support of kidnapped French journalist to take place in Bamako June 8
Supporters of kidnapped French journalist to stage a demonstration in Bamako, Mali, June 8. Transport disruptions possible.
Event
Supporters of kidnapped French journalist Olivier Dubois plan to stage a demonstration in Bamako June 8. The demonstration is expected to take place at Maison de la Presse from 10:00 to 13:00.
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely around the Maison de la Presse. Clashes are possible if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse, particularly if no permission to gather has been obtained before the demonstration begin.
Context
French officials confirmed May 5 that Dubois, an independent journalist, was kidnapped in the city of Gao April 8; the confirmation followed the release of a video allegedly showing the victim. In the video, the journalist stated that Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) militants linked to Al-Qaeda (AQ) had captured him. There has been no official ransom demand and the current location of the victim is unknown.
The journalist is the first French national to be abducted in Mali since 2016. The incident underscores the severe insecurity and risk of kidnap from armed elements operating in Mali, including across urban centers. Efforts by local authorities to halt such activities have largely failed to lessen the threat.
Advice
Avoid the any protests as a precaution. Plan for ground travel delays in the impacted area June 8. Monitor for updates regarding the events and associated disruptions.
