A bomb detonated near a military convoy en route to Menaka Airport at 14:30 Aug. 15. The explosion killed at least three Malian soldiers and injured an unspecified number. Security officials confirmed the incident. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across the country especially along the border regions with Burkina Faso and Niger. Islamist militants or affiliated groups waging an insurgency conduct attacks on a regular basis. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups continue to demonstrate an increased capability to strike civilians and security forces. The security situation in the Gao region is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence, as well as lawlessness and banditry.
