Argentina: Commemorative gatherings likely in cities nationwide to mark Loyalty Day on Oct. 17
Public gatherings likely in cities across Argentina Oct. 17 to commemorate Loyalty Day. Increased security, transport disruptions possible.
Event
Large gatherings are likely in prominent squares and other public spaces in cities across Argentina on Oct. 17 as the nation marks "Loyalty Day," an unofficial observance commemorating a mass labor protest that took place in Buenos Aires' Plaza del Mayo in 1945 and which is a day of national prominence within the Peronist political movement. President Alberto Fernandez has called on Argentines to assemble in cities nationwide starting at 16:00 to mark the occasion; this year, Loyalty Day coincides with Argentina's Mothers' Day observance.
Although they will be celebratory in nature, the gatherings will likely cause significant localized transport disruptions in urban areas. Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security as a precaution to monitor and facilitate the events. While most rallies will probably remain peaceful, isolated clashes cannot be ruled out, particularly if anti-Peronist activists attempt to assemble nearby.
Advice
Avoid all gatherings as a standard security precaution Oct. 17. Allow extra time to reach destinations near potential rally locations in major cities. Heed all directives from local authorities.
