Argentina: Tightened security likely in Rio Negro Province into at least early November following spate of attacks

Elevated security is likely across Rio Negro Province into at least early November in response to a series of attacks attributed to the Mapuche Ancestral Resistance (RAM) group. Three separate attacks have thus far taken place in October, with the most recent being an Oct. 20 act of arson targeting a well-known sports club in the town of El Bolson. In the wake of the new incident, Governor Arabela Carreras has formally requested the deployment of additional federal forces to reinforce the province's gendarmerie.

The deployment of additional security forces may result in some ground travel and business disruptions in Rio Negro Province. Authorities could establish additional checkpoints on thoroughfares in particularly impacted areas of the province. Regardless, protests and further attacks are likely across Rio Negro over the medium term.

Context

The situation in Argentina's Rio Negro Province mirrors that of the Biobio and Araucania regions in neighboring Chile, where a state of emergency has been put in place through Oct. 27 in response to attacks. Mapuche resistance groups span the Patagonian regions of the two countries.

Exercise increased situational awareness if operating in areas where attacks related to the Mapuche resistance are known to occur. Avoid all protests, as well as any areas where security forces appear to be deploying. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement personnel.
