An explosive device targeting a United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) convoy killed one soldier and injured four others in Tessalit, Kidal Region Oct. 1. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.

Tessalit is located 60 km (37 miles) south of the Algerian border.

Context

The attack underscores the pervasive insecurity in northern Mali emanating from Islamist militants. UN peacekeepers are often targeted. Landmine explosions, roadside bombs, and attacks are common in the central and northern regions of Mali and will likely persist in the near term. The threat is highest along highways and roads frequently used by security forces in places such as Mopti, Aguelhok, Anefis, Gao, Tessalit, and Tombouctou.
