Event
Two separate attacks killed seven Malian soldiers and wounded at least three others on Oct. 30. Insurgents ambushed a patrol in the town of Mourdiah, killing two soldiers and wounding three others. In the second attack, a roadside bomb in the town of Segou targeted an army vehicle, killing five soldiers.
Mourdiah is around 200 km north of Bamako while Segou is approximately 200 km northeast of the capital.
The Malian military will likely maintain a heightened security posture in the impact areas over the coming days. Further similar attacks remain almost certain.
Context
Insecurity is prevalent across much of Mali. Islamist militants or affiliated groups conduct attacks regularly. Despite continued security operations, armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to attack civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries, sporadic communal violence, and banditry.
