Unidentified armed assailants ambushed security forces in the Guire area, Koulikoro Region, Dec. 29. Attackers initially set up an explosive device targeting security personnel before opening fire. Authorities confirmed that the attack left eight soldiers killed and seven injured, while 31 assailants have been neutralized. Military forces also carried out airstrikes in the area after the assault. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Al-Qaeda and Islamic State-aligned militants are most likely to have executed the assault.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across the country. Islamist militants or affiliated groups conduct attacks on a regular basis, notably in the central and northern regions of Mali. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence and lawlessness, and banditry.
