Event

A logistics convoy belonging to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) struck an improvised explosive device (IED) while traveling along the RN16 motorway en route from Douentza to Sevare in Mopti Region, Dec. 8. At least seven peacekeepers were killed and three others seriously injured in the incident.

Increased security is likely in the area over the coming days. Further attacks on civilians and security personnel are also likely in the Mopti region.

Douentza is located about 339 km (210 miles) southwest of Gao.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across much of Mali. Islamist militants and affiliated groups regularly conduct attacks and plant IEDs in various areas nationwide. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups still demonstrate the ability to strike civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence and lawlessness, and banditry.

Avoid travel at night and consider traveling in convoy outside of Bamako. Liaise with trusted sources on the status of routes before departure. Maintain regular contact with your diplomatic representation.
