Mali: Activists plan rally in Bamako Jan. 8

The New Horizon Movement civil society group has called for a rally at Martyr's Monument in Bamako beginning 15:00 Jan. 8. Participants will gather to protest the military government's likely delaying of elections, among other concerns. Hundreds of people may attend.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of Martyr's Monument the afternoon of Jan. 8. Given the anti-government nature of the demonstration, clashes with security forces are possible. Counterdemonstrations cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all demonstrations and large concentrations of police and plan accordingly for ground travel disruptions. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
