Malian military officials confirmed Feb. 18 that at least eight soldiers died and another 14 were injured during clashes with militants in Archam, west of Tessit, Gao Region. Another five soldiers are missing after the fighting and two vehicles were destroyed. Officials claim that at least 57 militants also died during the operation.

Further military operations are possible in the area over the near term.

Tessit is located 127 km (79 miles) southeast of the city of Gao.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across much of Mali. Islamist militants or affiliated groups conduct attacks regularly. Despite continued security operations, armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to attack civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries, sporadic communal violence, and banditry.
