Opposition activists to protest nationwide in Mali, Feb. 27. Transportation disruptions likely. Clashes possible.

Warning

Event

A coalition of eight political opposition parties called the Faso Dembe Movement (MFD) plans to demonstrate nationwide, Feb. 27. The purpose of the action is to protest the ruling military government and to pressure it into holding democratic elections within six months. Organizers have as yet released no details concerning specific protest times or locations; however, demonstrators will likely gather near government buildings and in prominent city squares in major cities.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely. Clashes are possible between protesters and security personnel.

Context

Mali is currently run by a military-led junta. Since coming into power in 2020, this government has resisted efforts to hold democratic elections, originally slated for Feb. 27, 2022. Opposition protests are increasingly likely in the weeks and months ahead as the government signals its intent to delay elections for up to five years.

Advice

Avoid all large gatherings. Allow extra time to reach destinations near potential demonstration locations on Feb. 27. Heed the advice of local security officials. Monitor local media for the latest updates on protest locations and times.
