Argentina: Activists protest government deal with the IMF outside National Congress in Buenos Aires, March 10

Activists protest government deal with the IMF outside National Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina, March 10; localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with several organizations including the Socialist Workers' Party (Partido de los Trabajadores Socialistas, PTS), are holding a protest outside the National Congress in Buenos Aires March 10. The purpose of the action is to oppose an agreement between the national government and the IMF. Members of Congress are scheduled to debate, and likely approve, the agreement March 10. The protest is becoming increasingly disruptive, as demonstrators are throwing stones at the congress building and burning tires.

Heightened security in the area is highly likely, with associated transport and business disruptions, especially along Rivadavia, Mayo, and Yrigoyen avenues. Clashes between demonstrators and police are possible. The protest is likely to continue through at least early March 11.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-government building. Seek alternate routes. Do not attempt to drive through protester roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them instead before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near congress. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
