Bolivia: Protesters disrupt transport in Guarayos, March 23

Protesters disrupt transport in Ascension de Guarayos, Guarayos, Bolivia, March 23.

Informational

Event

Around 300 protesters have staged a now four-day long road blockade near Ascension de Guarayos, Guarayos, Bolivia, as of March 23. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand that the government take action over the murder of a young farmer and settle ongoing land disputes. The protest has led to traffic disruptions at Route 9, which connects Beni and Santa Cruz.

While the action has remained largely peaceful, clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely over the coming days.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-government building. Seek alternate routes while Route 9 is blocked. Do not attempt to drive through protester roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential protest locations. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
