Bolivia: Protesters disrupting transport throughout Cochabamba, March 17
Activists disrupting transport throughout Cochabamba, Bolivia, March 17 to demand increased social spending.
Event
Activists affiliated with the Departmental Workers' Union (Central Obrera Departamental, COD) have launched protests throughout Cochabamba on March 17. The purpose of the action is to demand increased social spending. Demonstrators have blocked roads in multiple areas of the city - including the Huayculi, Quillacollo, and Chaki Mayo bridges - and causing traffic disruptions.
While the action has remained largely peaceful, clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely to continue over the coming hours.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-government building. Plan alternate routes to reach destinations within Cochabamba. Do not attempt to drive through protester roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them instead before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential protest locations. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
