Argentina: Activists call for nationwide demonstrations July 27

Activists plan rallies across Argentina July 27 for greater social spending. Tight security, disruptions likely. Clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Activists from a variety of labour groups, including the Piquetera Unit (Unidad Piquetera) and the Union of Workers of the Popular Economy (Union de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de la Economia Popular, UTEP), are planning nationwide demonstrations July 27 to demand universal income and increased social spending in the face of increased costs of living, as well as to denounce alleged repression of protests.

The main demonstration is planned for 09:00 in Buenos Aires, starting from different locations, including the Labor Ministry and Avenida de Mayo, and ending at the Plaza de Mayo. Organizers have also called for supporting rallies in main public squares in other cities in Argentina, although no specific details are currently available.

The Piquetera Unit is well-known for organizing disruptive protests, and crowds of thousands to tens of thousands are likely in Buenos Aires, with thousands likely gathering in other major cities. Heightened security is likely, as are transit disruptions throughout impacted locations on July 27. Clashes are possible if police attempt to disperse crowds.

Advice

Avoid demonstrations due to the risk of clashes. Plan on transit disruptions if traveling through Buenos Aires and other major cities. Confirm appointments. Comply with directives given by authorities. If clashes occur, take shelter in a secure non-government building.
