Mali: Activist group to stage anti-MINUSMA rally in Bamako Aug. 5

Civil society activists plan anti-MINUSMA rally at Palace of Culture in Bamako, Mali, Aug. 5. Increased security likely.

Informational

Event

Malian civil society movement Yerewolo Debout sur les Remparts plans to stage a rally in Bamako Aug. 5. The purpose of the event is to demand that the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) withdraw from the country completely by Sep. 22. Participants will gather the Amadou Hampate Ba Palace of Culture starting at 14:00; it remains unclear whether the gathering will take place entirely inside the venue or activists may also assemble in outdoor spaces.

Authorities will likely deploy increased security near the venue as a precaution and in order to contain the rally. Localized traffic disruptions are possible. Clashes with police could occur if activists attempt to leave the Palace of Culture premises and march along nearby roads.

Context

Yerewolo Debout sur les Remparts has been one of Mali's most vocal critics of MINUSMA and proponents of the mission's withdrawal from the country. The group has a history of protest activity in Bamako, with demonstrations sometimes turning violent. Previous rallies and protests by Yerewolo have taken place near the Monument de I’Independence, Route de Koulikoro, Third Bridge, Tour d’Afrique, and King Fahd Bridge. It is unlikely that the organization will relent in its campaign demanding MINUSMA's departure; on the contrary, Yerewolo's activities could intensify as the Sep. 22 deadline approaches.

Advice

Avoid the announced rally venue as a precaution and heed the instructions of local authorities. Monitor local media for updated information on any protests as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. If clashes erupt nearby, exit the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a publicly accessible non-governmental building until it is safe to depart.
