Mali: US Department of State orders departure of nonemergency US government employees from country July 29 amid heightened terror risk

US Department of State orders departure of nonemergency US government employees from Mali July 29 amid heightened risk of militant attacks.

Warning

Event

The US Department of State ordered the departure of nonemergency US government workers and their families from Mali July 29. The travel advisory reportedly comes amid a heightened risk of militant attacks targeting locations popular with Western travelers and further instructs individuals to refrain from traveling to the country due to the risks of crime, terrorism, and kidnapping. The advisory states that the US Embassy in Bamako remains limited in its capacity to provide emergency assistance to US citizens in the country.

Militant attacks are possible in areas across the country over the coming days and weeks; any such assaults are most likely to target Malian security forces or Western interests.

Context

The US travel advisory comes after a series of coordinated militant attacks on Malian military positions in Sevare, Sokolo, and Kalumba killed at least 18 people, including 15 soldiers, and wounded dozens of others July 27. Additionally, Al-Qaeda-linked militants assaulted the country's largest military facility in Kati, located some 15 km (9 miles) north of Bamako, July 22. Malian authorities have implemented a state of maximum alert following the recent attacks, augmenting security measures on major thoroughfares in Bamako and near public buildings.

Advice

Exercise extreme caution if operating in Mali. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Confirm route and destination security conditions before conducting ground movements. Carry proper identification and travel documents. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Remain alert to your surroundings at all times; if violence occurs, take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
