Argentina: Unionized municipal workers to strike, protest throughout Buenos Aires Province, and the city of Buenos Aires Aug. 30

Municipal workers to strike, protest throughout Buenos Aires Province, and the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Aug. 30. Disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Unionized municipal workers plan to strike and hold protests throughout Buenos Aires Province and the city of Buenos Aires Aug. 30. The purpose of the action is to demand salary increases. Striking workers will likely demonstrate throughout the province, including in the capital La Plata, and in the city of Buenos Aires, where participants plan to gather at the House of the Province of Buenos Aires. Protests may occur elsewhere, including at the National Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security.

Although the action may remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence near the demonstration sites as a precaution. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Seek alternative routes to circumvent related transport disruptions and allow additional time to reach destinations. Do not attempt to navigate around protester-erected roadblocks; allow police to dismantle them before proceeding. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
