Bolivia: Demonstrators stage protests and block roads in La Paz Aug. 15

Coca growers affiliated with the Departmental Association of Coca Producers (Asociacion Departamental de Productores de Coca, ADEPCOCA) are staging street demonstrations and blocking roads in the Tres de Mayo, Villa Fatima, and El Carmen neighborhoods of La Paz Aug. 15. Among the roads affected are Avenida Ramiro Castillo and Avenida Periferica; demonstrators may block other routes as well.

As a result of the protests, some businesses in the area have closed. There is likely to be an increased police presence near all demonstration sites. Clashes are possible; recent protests by ADEPCOCA have led to fighting between demonstrators and police that caused severe injuries.

Context

The protests reflect a split among organized coca growers in La Paz, with some growers supporting the governing Movement toward Socialism (Movimiento al Socialismo, MAS) party and others opposing it. The opposing groups operate different coca markets in the city and call on the government to defend their respective market and close the market of their rivals.
