The clashes, which took place in the vicinity of the neighborhood's Calle 1, were preceded by a protest march organized by coca leaf growers affiliated with the Departmental Association of Coca Producers (Asociacion Departamental de Productores de Coca, ADEPCOCA). The purpose of the protest was to demand the closure of a coca market in the area; demonstrators claim that the market is operating illegally.
