Further protests and increased security likely after protesting coca growers clash with police in Villa El Carmen, La Paz, Bolivia, Aug. 1.

Warning

Event

Further protest activity and heightened security are likely in the Villa El Carmen area of La Paz through at least Aug. 2 after protesting coca leaf growers clashed with police in the neighborhood Aug. 1. The clashes, which took place in the vicinity of the neighborhood's Calle 1, were preceded by a protest march organized by coca leaf growers affiliated with the Departmental Association of Coca Producers (Asociacion Departamental de Productores de Coca, ADEPCOCA). The purpose of the protest was to demand the closure of a coca market in the area; demonstrators claim that the market is operating illegally.

Any additional protest activity would likely prompt localized transport and business disruptions. Further clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the affected area until the protest activity abates. Allow additional time to reach destinations in La Paz Aug. 1-2; consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the scene of the unrest. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
