Bolivia: Multiple roadblocks continue to cause disruptions in the Santa Cruz Department, as of Aug. 5
Activists maintain multiple roadblocks throughout the Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia, as of Aug. 5. Disruptions ongoing.
Event
Farmers affiliated with the ruling Movement Towards Socialism (Movimiento al Socialismo, MAS) party are maintaining numerous roadblocks throughout the Santa Cruz Department, Aug. 5, to demand a new land bill; they are also demanding that the government gives them legal ownership of their lands. Reports indicate there are at least six roadblocks in the department:
Along Route 9, connecting Santa Cruz with the Beni Department in Cerro Grande, Santa Maria, Ascension de Guarayos, and San Ramon.
Along Route 4: in Pailon, located east of the city of Santa Cruz.
Along Route 4, in Buena Vista connecting Santa Cruz with the Cochabamba Department.
Authorities have reported clashes in the Guarayos municipality, as local residents try to reopen the roads forcibly. Transport workers have also said they plan to block access to the Palmasola refinery in Santa Cruz if authorities do not reopen the roads.
Significant transport disruptions throughout the Santa Cruz Department are likely to continue. Clashes between opposing groups of protesters, and between police and those blocking the roads are likely in the coming days. Shortages of basic items have been reported in parts of Santa Cruz, and they are likely to worsen if the roadblocks continue.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Confirm appointments in the Santa Cruz department before leaving your lodging accommodation. Do not attempt to cross a roadblock; plan for alternative routes and allow additional time to reach your destination.
