Argentina: Civic organizations will demonstrate in La Plata Sept. 18
Civic organizations will demonstrate in La Plata, Argentina, 15:00 Sept. 18. Increased security, localized disruptions likely
Event
Social and human rights organizations will demonstrate in La Plata on Sept. 18 to mark the sixteenth anniversary of Jorge Julio Lopez's disappearance. Lopez was a witness in the 2006 trial against Buenos Aires police officer Miguel Etchecolatz for crimes against humanity. Participants will gather in Plaza Moreno from around 15:00 for a rally in front of the Municipal Palace.
Authorities will likely deploy additional police to monitor the gathering. Increased security measures may prompt localized traffic disruptions. While widespread violence is not anticipated, low-level scuffles between police and participants, as well as arrests, cannot be entirely ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution. Follow local security and travel advice. Allow extra time if traveling by road or public transport in the vicinity. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately.
