Argentina: Labor organizations to launch nationwide strike Sept. 27

Labor unions to launch nationwide strike in Argentina Sept. 27. Heightened security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with several labor unions, including the Association of State Workers (Asociacion Trabajadores del Estado, ATE), plan to launch a nationwide strike Sept. 27. The purpose of the action is to demand improved salaries and benefits. Organizers of the strike have also stated that the action will include protests, especially in Buenos Aires; however, labor leaders have as yet released no details concerning times or locations for such gatherings.

While any protests that may materialize should remain largely peaceful, heightened security is likely outside government offices and along major roads, especially in the capital. Transport and business disruptions are likely near any demonstrations.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations in Buenos Aires and other major cities. Confirm any business appointments on Sept. 27. Heed the instructions of security authorities.
